Birthday Joys

Today I celebrated the first day of my thirty-ninth year. My last year as a thirtysomething! I had a great day.

This morning Bo, Isaac, and I went to the pumpkin patch, and while there, God gave me a pumpkin! You see..... our family has this thing, we find money. We find money in strange places. Not dollar bills. 20 dollar bills (in Noah's sock drawer). 50 dollar bills (in a pile of wood in the garage). 100 dollar bills (floating across the street, landing in Bo's hand). I kid you not! Well, today while at the pumpkin patch, I was looking for a patch of shade to take Bo and Isaac's picture, and as we squatted on the ground, we found a ten dollar bill wadded up in the grass. (Heather, are you reading this? :) So, we picked out our pumpkin, and took the ten dollars to the clerk! There was even enough left for boiled peanuts and tea.

Thank you God for my birthday pumpkin. I love it.

I Do

During a walk, Noah and I had an interesting conversation:

Noah: "Is God married?"

Me (think, think, think): "No, honey, God isn't married, but we are engaged to His son"

Noah: "What?"

Me: "Well, the people who love God will marry Jesus when we get to heaven"

Noah laughs: "I can't marry Jesus. I'm just a boy"

Me (think, think, think): "Yea, well, it's a little different, Jesus loves us like a groom loves his bride"

Noah: "So when we get to heaven, boys will kiss boys?"

Me (God, help me explain this!) : "No, baby, God uses the symbol of marriage to tell us that's how much He loves us, and the whole church will be the Bride of Christ that marries Jesus"

Noah, silence.

Me: "What do you think?"

Noah, lifts up his index finger, turns to it and asks "what do you think, finger?"

Noah and finger "Happy."

Baby Sick-i-Poo???????

OK, so Isaac has been feverish and super cranky since getting his second round of vaccines last week. Crying, fussing, not sleeping well, no appetite. He has been pitiful, and it was driving me crazy not knowing what was wrong and how to help him. I called the on-call doctor last weekend, all mad because my sweet baby was running a temperature of 101.1 because of injections they gave him, but trying to remain calm because after all, it wasn't her fault. She said this was normal and should pass after the first day. The fever resolved after the weekend, but the irritability continued. So I call our Nigerian doctor yesterday and she tells me I can bring Issac in today and she will examine him. I bring my cranky, fussy, irritable, uncomfortable infant to the clinic and while waiting for the doctor, capture some of the misery on my phone.

Here are the pics......

Oh, yeah. All it took for my baby to turn back to his happy self was a lengthy wait in the doctor's office. He babbled at the top of his lungs, flirted with the nurse, played with the med student, and gave his mother a kiss!

Welcome back Happy Baby.

Jury Duty

I served my "civic duty" as Bo called it (I reminded him I drive a Ford, would they still want me???? :). Today I joined droves of folks filing into the Albany, Ga courthouse, jury summons in hand, to "pay the price that living in a democracy costs" (one of the judges put it that way). I served on a panel in Superior Court.

I was one of 50 or so, that was pulled from a room of 150 or so, to be considered to sit on the jury for a murder trial. The entire morning was a series of questions to all of us....general questions like , "what do you do?", "do you know the defendant, the attorneys, or the deceased?", "can you be impartial to try this case objectively?" and then more specific questions, "do you have family in law enforcement?", "have you ever called 911?", "are your familiar with the area where the crime occurred?" "would you consider a police officer to have more credence that an eyewitness?".

I was not chosen to be on the jury, so I was dismissed this afternoon. I will be praying for the jurors, though. Looks like it's going to be a tough job. The defendant is charged with beating a guy to death with a stick, and from the attorney's questions, looks like the whole case lies on an eyewitness. That would be hard, if one person's testimony was the only "evidence" to consider while deciding judgement against another human being.

An interesting day.

The Joy of Teens

Does everyone know that raising teenagers is like trying to nail jello to a tree??? AAHHHHH, Jesus help me, I'm about to sell one to the gypsies.
